12 Questions to Ask a Wedding Photographer

Juli and Ron's Wedding
{Our own wedding 1994  -  Photo by "a friend of the family."}

Wedding Blogs, Instagram and Pinterest have become the top three bride inspiring, image addicting, wedding planning go-to's for brides everywhere to prepare for their big day.

None of these were around when I got married, (quite some time ago) but back then, we planned our weddings through torn pages from a handful of popular bridal magazines tucked inside of a 3 ring binder. Yet ultimately, we did whatever our families told us we needed to do. What we were supposed to do... "because that's what you do at a wedding." If I had told my mom when I was 23, that I wanted my wedding in a barn, beside a lake, with handmade chandeliers and lace ribbons hanging from trees... she would have had a heart attack! I was already breaking some unspoken rule by having my bridesmaids each wear their own unique dresses in the same color rather than the standard matching "bridesmaid" dresses. You would have thought I was some kind of hellion by the uproar I caused my family. It was bad enough that I didn't understand why we had to invite an additional 150 people that neither my husband, nor I even knew.

But one of the areas that there really isn't much help is where it comes to knowing how to select the right Wedding Photographer for YOU. There are lots of blogs giving advice on this matter, but not many really give you the information you really need. Choosing the right photographer for your day is essential because that will be the lasting memory of your wedding.

NARROWING IT DOWN

Your first step is to figure out your style. Think about what sort of photos you like.
Do you prefer more of a lifestyle, journalistic look, or maybe you love more posed and planned images?
Do you tend to pin more images of the couple looking directly at the camera, or of intimate moments between them?
Do you like more trendy, planned poses, or the tears of joy, dancing and laughing the night away?
Do you go for more of the traditional posed images at the altar, or do you prefer the images where the couple are alone at a beautiful, scenic location.
Do you like the soft romantic look of film, love a little more dramatic color, or do you prefer those dreamy black and white images?
For that matter, its even possible that you like a mix of all of these things!

In the end, finding a photographer who's style you LOVE, matters more than anything else. Yes, that's right, even more than the budget, because most photographers will be willing to work with you through a contracted payment plan, to help you out.

Don't just judge a book by the cover...  If you love one or two of their images you have come across, check out their website to look at as much of their work as you can. Do they only show  a handful of images or only images from 1 - 3 weddings? Or maybe less than 10 images are shown altogether? Hmmmm, that's not really enough to make a good call. Sometimes an inexperienced photographer will get "lucky" with a couple of nice images here or there, but if the majority of their work doesn't make your heart flutter, then that may have been the case. I recommend that you don't take your chances just to save a few bucksA typical portfolio will contain somewhere between 20-40 images from 5 or more highlighted weddings, and possibly even a slideshow example of a wedding.

Once you have narrowed down your search to maybe your 5 favorite photographers who's style you really love, then look into their prices. Some will post them on their website, but many will only post a starting price with a little information, and some will not provide any pricing at all. Now don't take this as being sneaky. It is all just a personal choice by the photographer. Some prefer not to get an email asking for prices, while others prefer to start to get to know you right away, and discussing prices and packages opens the door to conversation.   recommended photographer who is within your price range. Expect the photos to take up quite a big chunk of your budget. Remember, these will be your everlasting images for years to come so you want to spend the right amount of money on this area to get exactly what you need.

Then contact those photographers armed with a list of questions that are most important to you and your specific needs.

I recommend you DO NOT email a photographer ONLY asking for a price. To be completely honest with you, it comes across as that is the only thing that matters to you. Photographers (the professional ones anyway,) are in no way interested in entering into a bidding war with another photographer to book your wedding. And they certainly don't want you to choose them because they were "the cheapest one." So asking about their packages is great, but you should also want to know some additional things about them. Email them prepared with a few questions to show that you really ARE interested in hiring someone you will be working closely with, not just price shopping.

12 QUESTIONS

  1. Ask about their experience and what services they provide for the packages they offer.
  2. Do they use film or digital technology?
  3. Do they have references or online reviews? If so, ask to see them. They should be able to give you a direct link to at lest a couple locations rather than simply telling you to go to their Facebook page.
  4. Do they work alone, have an assistant, or offer a second shooter? And who actually takes the photos?
  5. Are they insured and how do they ensure that images taken at your wedding, are not lost or damaged?
  6. What is their average turnaround time from the wedding to a completed gallery of images? And how long does it take from ordering prints to receiving them?
  7. Do they offer packages that include both digital files AND prints? And if so, what kind of print labs do they use for their products? Having digital files is great, but you also want to ensure that any product comes from a professional print lab, not a 1 hour lab or an inexpensive consumer or departments store lab. Those products (prints, albums, canvas or metal prints, etc) are not going to provide you with good quality, color or archival inks or papers. (You get what you pay for.)
  8. Do they offer albums? If so, how many photos and pages does the album have? Who selects the images to be included? And do you have the option to request any image selection changes to the album before it goes to print?
  9. Do they provide a website where family and friends can order their own prints?
  10. Request a complete description of the packages they offer, and what is included for each one.
  11. What is the total cost and are there any possible added fees such as extra time added on the wedding day, travel costs, etc?
  12. Lastly, but most importantly, do they have a contract and what are the payment terms and conditions? (Read it carefully.)

Personal recommendations are great, but keep in mind that someone else's favorite, may not be yours too. In fact, my own wedding photographer came highly recommended by my family, and you can see from the image above, how well that turned out for me. So take the time to find the right fit for YOU.

Best of luck! I hope this helps.

The Most Profound Wedding I've Ever Photographed: PNW Olympic Pennensula

What I do is far more important than you or I realize.
I don't mean that *I* am important.
I don't mean monetarily.
I don't even mean in some grandeur way regarding talent and skill.

Sure, your wedding day is important to you. Of course it is. There are actually many special times in your life that you will value enough to be worth hiring a professional photographer. But here's when I realized just how significant, how important, how truly momentous my chosen career really is...

Not long ago, I photographed the wedding of a young lady, Shayna, whom I'd known her entire life. Her mom, Lisa, and I grew up together. Lisa and I had been fast friends since our very first day of Kindergarten. In grade school, she was one of my shiest friends, and by High School, she was one of my craziest, funniest, and most outgoing friends. And later, as we both had families, our daughters grew up together as she and I were their Girl Scout Troop Leaders.

My sweet bride, Shayna, had lost her Dad when she was quite young. So when she walked down the isle, there was Lisa, her mom, walking with her to give her away.

The whole wedding was incredibly emotional with such wonderful connections to her dad; from the charms on her bouquet of flowers, to the entire "village" of men in her life who collectively helped raise her, each taking turns dancing with her in place of her Dad. The whole day was truly extraordinary.

Two days after Shayna and her groom Curtis's wedding, the bride's mother, my dear friend, died unexpectedly. Devastated does not even begin to describe how I have felt ever since.

I needed to do something. I was in shock and hurting, but I needed to do something that might help Shayna and her family because I couldn't imagine what they were going through. So I immediately set everything else aside and worked non stop to make sure that Shayna received all her wedding images right away so that she would have her full gallery of images as soon as possible, to help her and her entire family heal and to display all around Lisa's Celebration of Life. That was the most difficult week I had ever worked. I cried with every single image I edited. But the experience made me realize just how important and meaningful my personal reasons for WHY I do what I do, actually are.

Take nothing for granted, for nothing is guaranteed.

Backyard Fairytale Wedding: Olympia, Washington: Brittany + Troy

Brittany & Troy had a wedding that could have been straight out of a Disney fairytale,  complete with baby hummingbirds hiding in their nest above the portraits. Brittany even naturally referred to Troy as her "Prince" several times in both their Engagement Session at Tumwater Falls, as well as during their wedding day.
Here are just a few of the images from their magical storybook wedding.

There were happy tears right from the beginning, starting with the moment the Bride's father came in to see her, to the Groom's blindfolded and not-so-private moment before the ceremony. There were even more tears at the first sight of the Bride as she walked down the isle, and even during the toasts and dances!

"My dad once said there are plenty of fish in the sea. So I went online to plentyoffish.com and cast my reel. After a couple of throw backs. I finally reeled in myself a keeper. He was the perfect fish in the sea." ~Brittany

Troy took a special moment with his handsome, young ring bearer just before the ceremony...

... as did the Bride's Father, as he gave his daughter away.

I promise you, I have never seen a ceremony full of so much laughter... and tears.

No wedding ceremony is complete without the kiss....

...and maybe a secret handshake.

Snow White had her forest animals, Cinderella, her mice.... Brittany? She had her Minions.... and they were everywhere! (Secretly making my day.) I think the only thing that outnumbered the Minions, were the references to the Bride's love of the perfect Mac-N-Cheese and the number of corks continuously interrupting the toasts.
Truly, so much laughter throughout this wedding !

Instead of a guestbook, the family and friends all wrote their wishes to the couple on a beautifully made bench, given by the Groom's Mother, in remembrance of Troy's brother, Branden, who had made a similar bench while in High School.

Oh, and yes, of course this Princess and her Prince honeymooned at Disneyland!

Thanks Brittany and Troy for including me in your special day!

And many thanks to the creative team who made the wedding so special...

Private Online Galleries - [Bonell Photography: Grays Harbor]

Your online gallery with Bonell Photography now comes with maximum security.

Your privacy is among my top priorities. So all my client's galleries are password protected... 3X! First, in accessing the entire Client Galleries section, again to enter each individual Gallery. And finally with your own personal account setting! Every access point on the BP side has separate, unique, top security passwords that are highly sensitive. Then, you have the added availability to add your own private password to view your personal galleries with ease!

That being said, it's still easy for you to share your entire online gallery, with those you select, through our PRIVATE GALLERY INVITE. Think of it like a private party with a secret handshake. Simply invite people you would like to have full access to your images
by sending me your exclusive vip guests' email addresses. I'll then enter the addresses you send me, to your gallery's "guest list", and a PRIVATE GALLERY INVITE will be automatically emailed to them. They create their own personal account and BAM!!

Currently, you can invite up to 50 people to privately view your gallery, order prints and download the files, (when your packages includes the Digital Download.) If you don't want them all to have downloadable access, simply request a download code be required.

In addition to the security, the emailed invite only works once and is unique to the receiver. So if the email is forwarded, the invite won't work. Or if North Korea hacks into their email account thinking they are a movie industry, it wont even work for them.

Decide your "Private Party" is getting out of hand? You can simply let me know who the unruly guest is, and I will revoke their access to the gallery. ACCESS DENIED!

So no matter if you are booking a Senior Session, Wedding or even a Belle Boudoir session, rest assured that your images are safe with us.

Elegant Summer Wedding, Olympia, Washington: Kayla + Leland

The petticoat was left behind, an unexpected bike race through town blocked the access to their first look and portraits location... expect the unexpected on your wedding day, right? You would also expect a day like this would rattle any bride. Nope, not Kayla. She, not only took it all in stride, but simply smiled, laughed and kept on enjoying every single moment of the day. The good, the bad and the absolutely wonderful!

"No matter what happens... the only thing that REALLY matters, is that Leland and I are getting married today."

Even with the few things that went wrong, many things went very right. The typical overcast/rainy Pacific Northwest day, instead gave way to some perfect summer weather. And spoiler alert, everything came together in the end... and yes, Kayla & Leland indeed, became Husband & Wife.
Here is a sneak peek into their beautiful day...

The day began with hair and makeup by Haley Snell at the DoubleTree Inn, in Olympia, accompanied by champagne, and lots of laughter.

After finally finding our way around the downtown bike race, Kayla and Leland were able to enjoy a private moment for Leland's "first look" of his gorgeous bride. I'm not kidding when I say that Kayla would be stunning in a potato sack, but this full lace dress adorned with crystals and beads, was pure perfection. Needless to say, Leland was awed by his bride.

The guys were quite the handsome group of gentlemen!

The ladies were stunningly beautiful in their elegant plum dresses.

The wedding was hosted at the Grand Holiday Ballroom and was the perfect backdrop for this classic and elegant wedding.

The reception was filled with laughter, love and LOTS of dancing, but Leland stole the show with his smooth moves during his first dance with his new bride.

Thanks Kayla and Leland for including me in all the fun!

And many thanks to the creative team who made the wedding so special...

Hey there!

I'm Juli Bonell - Beauty Photographer.

You could easily say that I'm a bit eclectic; an outgoing introvert who's obsessed with vanilla chai lattes, travelling, forensic science & zombies. I see beauty in urban decay, and I love yoga just as much as I love singing loudly in my car with the windows down. (Let's just say that last one's not pretty.)
