How to Create and Buy Greeting Cards through your Gallery

You've got gorgeous photos in your galleries. Turn them into beautiful cards!
All cards come with matching white envelopes. All you have to do is sign, seal, and stamp.

What Are They Like?

4x8 cards are printed on high-quality card stock and are available in matte, felt, and pearl stock.
5x7 cards come printed on luxuriously thick card stock, folded in the middle. They're matte with a UV coating that gives the outside just a hint of sheen. The inside is smooth enough to pen a personal message.

Make Your Card!

1. Find your first photo.

Browse your gallery until you spot the photo you want. From there, click the Buy button, then choose "Create a Card."

2. Choose your card type.

Pick whether you want a 4x8 or a 5x7 card, then scroll through the carousel at the bottom to select a design. When you see one you like, click it and we'll open it bigger.
Don't forget to click "Designs" at the bottom if you want to narrow down your choices and browse designs for specific occasions.

3. Customize it!

The little "headshot" icons indicate the spaces where you can drag and drop photos from your photo pool on the right. Once you've assigned the photos a spot, you can click them again to zoom, rotate, scooch around, or even convert to black and white!
When you're finished zooming and scooching, click the little "X" in the corner to close the edit bubble. You can always undo your changes and start over.
The "T" icons indicate areas where you can click and enter text.

NOTE: Some cards will let you customize the font size, type, and other options, but not all designs offer that choice.

4. Make it yours.

When your card's perfect, click the Save button at the bottom to keep your changes.
Choose the quantity of cards you want from the section on the right, then click the Add to Cart button at the bottom. Now you're ready to check out!

Make a mistake?

You won't have the ability to correct your saved cards yourself, but I can do it for you. When it's ready, I can share the link to the corrected card so you can click the Buy button and check out from there. Simply hit the familiar Buy button. We'll display your available options:
Tip: Need to make more than one card? Exit the card builder and start a new session.
FAQ: What about the Watermark? They'll show in your online previews, but your cards won't print with them, don't worry.

Here's a quick video that shows you how easy it is to build your own cards:

33 Tips on Preparing for your Senior Session: Girls | Grays Harbor Premier Photographer

Hey there beautiful!
Are you excited!? I know I am! I absolutely LOVE Senior Sessions. They are so much fun and I REALLY want to help you put your best foot (or face) forward.
Us girls tend to be really hard on ourselves... and I mean,
really hard on ourselves. So I want to help you prepare for your session to help you come in feeling relaxed, confident, beautiful, and ready to ROCK this thing! So I've put together a great list to help you be camera ready.
Don't wait till the night before your session to start getting ready. Check out this list and start thinking about how you can do a few things now, to make your session run smooth, stress free and looking and feeling your best!

LADIES SESSION PREP
  • Haircuts at least one week prior. We all know we get frustrated with our hair the first couple of days after a new haircut! Give yourself plenty of time to master that new cut and style. (1-2 weeks is best.)
  • Haircolor at least one week prior. This will ensure that your skin is not stained from color. It also allows enough time for color to settle down and soften up. If you have it done much before two weeks, depending on how far you color is from your natural color, you could have lines from grow out.
  • H20 Staying hydrated helps your skin by preventing breakouts and giving you beautifully glowing skin. So start making it a habit now, weeks before your session, to get the best results.
  • Facial Blemishes tend to get WORSE when handled/scratched/picked, so do your best to refrain from handling those bad boys. If you don't already, start a routine now, to wash and care for your skin daily. Clear skin is a HUGE confidence booster. -- Don't worry though. We all get surprises and I can edit out the small stuff easily!
  • No Spray Tans Please (They tend to look more orange than tan in portraits.)
  • Nails (Make sure you have fresh polish or shine on hands and feet both. Expect them to show - chips stand out!)
  • Bring Extra outfits! (More than you think.) Think something fun that shows your personality as well as something nice that mom would be proud to hang on the wall or send in announcements, maybe even something dressy (prom dress for an example) Start putting it all together, or shopping for items you need. Bringing plenty of items will give us flexibility in matching your clothing to backgrounds and surroundings.
  • Hang It Up This makes for quick on-the-spot clothing decisions and keeps clothes looking great.
  • Dress in layers for variety and simple change-ups. (ex: tank, shirt, jackets, sweaters, scarfs...)
  • Accessories These can really bring personal style to your session. (Jewelry, hair, earrings, scarves, hats, etc.)
  • Bold/ Solid colors look best. Not a rule, but they often photograph better than patterns & pale pastels.
  • Shirts with Logos can be distracting.
  • Don't Wear a Hat before the session (hat hair) but bring some as accessories if you like.
  • No Sun Glasses before your session either because they leave red marks on nose, but bring some as a prop if you'd like for a shot or two.
  • Fresh Shave -but don't shave those legs 30 minutes before the session. This makes skin blotchy and red.
  • Glasses Most lenses have a glare. The safest option is to check with your eye doctor and ask if they’ll loan you a similar pair without lenses. Otherwise, I'll do my best to shoot at angles to minimize the reflection. Or you can remove your glasses entirely for the shoot. My rule of thumb however is, if you wear your glasses most of the time, we keep the glasses on for the shoot because it is part of your style and who you are.
  • Braces can be remove in Photoshop for an extra charge of $10 per image. Otherwise, try not to worry about them. Give a natural smile and enjoy yourself. A good smile with braces is far better than the awkward smile that comes when you try to hide them.
  • Be careful of heavy/thick Eye Liner This tends to make eyes appear squinty in photos, even if you're not.
  • Use Waterproof Mascara Non waterproof will flake or smear around the eye easily in the sun or with clothing changes.
  • Friends & Parents are welcome to join you and often can be a help. However, if they distract you, it may be best to meet them when the session is over. You’re welcome to have a couple of shots with a boyfriend, best friend, sibling, or parent at no extra charge.
  • Weather Don’t worry about clouds because they actually even out the light and make for ideal shooting conditions. But rain may be an issue depending on the look of the shoot or how severe the weather may be, and we may have to reschedule. Juli will try to contact you first, but feel free to email Juli if you have any doubts or concerns.

  • Accessories So many times, seniors will show up with great clothing and props and totally forget to bring various pieces of jewelry, extra shoes, jackets, scarves, etc. These items really dress up your session with personal style, making your session stand out and look crazy cool!
  • Lotion for dry skin areas that are exposed.
  • Q-Tips (to remove under eye makeup that "falls" during the session)
  • Bobby Pins / Hair Band etc for an end-of-session hair change up.
  • Mirror for on location session touch ups.
  • Hair Spray because you never know! I mean, this IS the Pacific Northwest!
  • Brush because... everything.
  • Baby Wipes for shoes/feet. This is surprisingly a big help if we are shooting outdoors. I try to keep some in my go bag, but I run out quickly with all teh shoots I do on the beaches or in muddy or wet areas.
  • Flip Flops so you don't end up trekking to and from locations in heels.
  • Nude bra's under light tops, Black bra under dark tops.
  • Cleavage Awareness Ladies... don't forget a cute tank for under those deep V tops and poses looking down at you. It's about YOU, not "the girls".
  • Tank Top/ Shorts (bike shorts, spandex, underarmor) something to wear under clothes for easy outdoor changes is helpful, but not necessary. I do have a portable changing room for outdoor, on location shoots. But by having something else on underneath, you will feel more comfortable making those quick changes on location.

THE NIGHT BEFORE...
Get all your clothes, accessories and props together and ready to go. Remember plastic ziplocs work well for jewelry and accessories so you can hang them with the corresponding outfits.
Stay Hydrated (It makes a big difference in the skin too!)
GET PLENTY OF REST!!!

DAY OF YOUR SESSION...
Start in the morning, and while getting ready, Drink water throughout the day to STAY HYDRATED
Style your hair! You will have these images for years, later on you will appreciate that you took a bit of time to prepare for your session. On this day, styling products, flat irons and curling irons will be your best friends.
Make up should represent you!
Avoid Sparkles in your make up, as it can sometime throw an odd reflection that will be seen in the photos.
Wear a lip color just a shade darker than your natural lips. This will make sure they stand out. Lip gloss is nice, so is mascara!
Remember shoes, socks for each outfit. Ladies remember bras and panties that work well under each outfit!
Eat ahead of time. (You are welcome to bring Snacks & liquids)

ARRIVAL...Arrive a little early, or on time to your appointment. Showing up late means you lose camera time, and we don’t want that. If you’re coming from out of town, give yourself plenty of time to find your way around.
Please don't forget to turn off your Cell Phone at the session.
And lastly, if you have a remaining balance on your Session Fee, it's due when you arrive.

Thanks again! I can't wait to see you soon!

12 Questions to Ask a Wedding Photographer

Juli and Ron's Wedding
{Our own wedding 1994  -  Photo by "a friend of the family."}

Wedding Blogs, Instagram and Pinterest have become the top three bride inspiring, image addicting, wedding planning go-to's for brides everywhere to prepare for their big day.

None of these were around when I got married, (quite some time ago) but back then, we planned our weddings through torn pages from a handful of popular bridal magazines tucked inside of a 3 ring binder. Yet ultimately, we did whatever our families told us we needed to do. What we were supposed to do... "because that's what you do at a wedding." If I had told my mom when I was 23, that I wanted my wedding in a barn, beside a lake, with handmade chandeliers and lace ribbons hanging from trees... she would have had a heart attack! I was already breaking some unspoken rule by having my bridesmaids each wear their own unique dresses in the same color rather than the standard matching "bridesmaid" dresses. You would have thought I was some kind of hellion by the uproar I caused my family. It was bad enough that I didn't understand why we had to invite an additional 150 people that neither my husband, nor I even knew.

But one of the areas that there really isn't much help is where it comes to knowing how to select the right Wedding Photographer for YOU. There are lots of blogs giving advice on this matter, but not many really give you the information you really need. Choosing the right photographer for your day is essential because that will be the lasting memory of your wedding.

NARROWING IT DOWN

Your first step is to figure out your style. Think about what sort of photos you like.
Do you prefer more of a lifestyle, journalistic look, or maybe you love more posed and planned images?
Do you tend to pin more images of the couple looking directly at the camera, or of intimate moments between them?
Do you like more trendy, planned poses, or the tears of joy, dancing and laughing the night away?
Do you go for more of the traditional posed images at the altar, or do you prefer the images where the couple are alone at a beautiful, scenic location.
Do you like the soft romantic look of film, love a little more dramatic color, or do you prefer those dreamy black and white images?
For that matter, its even possible that you like a mix of all of these things!

In the end, finding a photographer who's style you LOVE, matters more than anything else. Yes, that's right, even more than the budget, because most photographers will be willing to work with you through a contracted payment plan, to help you out.

Don't just judge a book by the cover...  If you love one or two of their images you have come across, check out their website to look at as much of their work as you can. Do they only show  a handful of images or only images from 1 - 3 weddings? Or maybe less than 10 images are shown altogether? Hmmmm, that's not really enough to make a good call. Sometimes an inexperienced photographer will get "lucky" with a couple of nice images here or there, but if the majority of their work doesn't make your heart flutter, then that may have been the case. I recommend that you don't take your chances just to save a few bucksA typical portfolio will contain somewhere between 20-40 images from 5 or more highlighted weddings, and possibly even a slideshow example of a wedding.

Once you have narrowed down your search to maybe your 5 favorite photographers who's style you really love, then look into their prices. Some will post them on their website, but many will only post a starting price with a little information, and some will not provide any pricing at all. Now don't take this as being sneaky. It is all just a personal choice by the photographer. Some prefer not to get an email asking for prices, while others prefer to start to get to know you right away, and discussing prices and packages opens the door to conversation.   recommended photographer who is within your price range. Expect the photos to take up quite a big chunk of your budget. Remember, these will be your everlasting images for years to come so you want to spend the right amount of money on this area to get exactly what you need.

Then contact those photographers armed with a list of questions that are most important to you and your specific needs.

I recommend you DO NOT email a photographer ONLY asking for a price. To be completely honest with you, it comes across as that is the only thing that matters to you. Photographers (the professional ones anyway,) are in no way interested in entering into a bidding war with another photographer to book your wedding. And they certainly don't want you to choose them because they were "the cheapest one." So asking about their packages is great, but you should also want to know some additional things about them. Email them prepared with a few questions to show that you really ARE interested in hiring someone you will be working closely with, not just price shopping.

12 QUESTIONS

  1. Ask about their experience and what services they provide for the packages they offer.
  2. Do they use film or digital technology?
  3. Do they have references or online reviews? If so, ask to see them. They should be able to give you a direct link to at lest a couple locations rather than simply telling you to go to their Facebook page.
  4. Do they work alone, have an assistant, or offer a second shooter? And who actually takes the photos?
  5. Are they insured and how do they ensure that images taken at your wedding, are not lost or damaged?
  6. What is their average turnaround time from the wedding to a completed gallery of images? And how long does it take from ordering prints to receiving them?
  7. Do they offer packages that include both digital files AND prints? And if so, what kind of print labs do they use for their products? Having digital files is great, but you also want to ensure that any product comes from a professional print lab, not a 1 hour lab or an inexpensive consumer or departments store lab. Those products (prints, albums, canvas or metal prints, etc) are not going to provide you with good quality, color or archival inks or papers. (You get what you pay for.)
  8. Do they offer albums? If so, how many photos and pages does the album have? Who selects the images to be included? And do you have the option to request any image selection changes to the album before it goes to print?
  9. Do they provide a website where family and friends can order their own prints?
  10. Request a complete description of the packages they offer, and what is included for each one.
  11. What is the total cost and are there any possible added fees such as extra time added on the wedding day, travel costs, etc?
  12. Lastly, but most importantly, do they have a contract and what are the payment terms and conditions? (Read it carefully.)

Personal recommendations are great, but keep in mind that someone else's favorite, may not be yours too. In fact, my own wedding photographer came highly recommended by my family, and you can see from the image above, how well that turned out for me. So take the time to find the right fit for YOU.

Best of luck! I hope this helps.
~ Juli

FAQs : Western Washington Senior, Wedding and Boudoir Photographer

Frequently Asked Questions

HOW LONG BEFORE MY PICTURES WILL BE READY?
I'm told that it takes 6 months to build a Rolls Royce, but only 13 hours to build a Toyota...
In our world of "instant" gratification, we have grown to simply expect everything to be available to us in lightning speed. That being said... my goal is always for you to have your completed images as soon as possible.

Typically, most portrait sessions are completed anywhere between 2-4 weeks and weddings between 2-4 months. However, if you must have your completed gallery, or a specific product, ready prior to a certain date, please let me know prior to booking. A "rush" order fee is only required in rare situations.

CAN YOU MAKE ME LOSE 40 POUNDS? /  CAN YOU PHOTOSHOP _________?
Ok, let's get real for a moment... I am a ninja when it comes to editing. A true superhero with amazing superhuman skills. But as I like to joke, "I can use my powers for good, as well as for evil." Hahaha!

I am happy to remove blemishes, bruises, soften wrinkles, tuck in / smooth out a natural bulge created by a waistband or strap, etc, I'll even remove distracting background objects or do a head-swap (when possible) on those occasions that someone blinked, or a child turned their head in the best group photo. This is all part of what I do and is included in my post-processing. But ultimately, I will not change who you are.
When it comes to slimming, most of the magic is in the proper and professional posing. So please don't be so hard on yourself. XOXO Body dis-morphia is real, and I understand that struggle, but while I may be an editing ninja, I am not a psychologist.
If you have specific editing requests or concerns, please let me know during the planning & consult stage prior to your session so we have time to discuss them in detail and have you feeling fully confident when it's finally time to meet.

Some editing requests take more detailed and extensive work and time. So if you would like something such as the entire addition or removal of a person, braces removal, specific body editing, post gallery reveal editing, etc, this will be at an additional cost of $20 to $30 per image.

ARE THERE ADDED TRAVEL FEES?

There are NO travel fees for locations within Grays Harbor County. This includes:
Hoquiam, Aberdeen, Central Park, Montesano, Brady, Satsop, Elma, Cosmopolis, Markham, Westport, Grayland, Ocean Shores, Seabrook, Pacific Beach, Copalis, Moclips, Taholah, Wishkah, and Humptulips.

I will gladly travel to the location of your choice and I often travel to the Olympia, Centralia, Tacoma, greater Seattle areas and beyond. If you would like your session to be outside of Grays Harbor County, I only require a small $25 travel fee for 50-150 miles outside of my studio's "local" area.

For events more than 150 miles from our Hoquiam office, the travel fee is raised to reflect the distance and any reimbursement of Lodging and Airfare (if necessary,) must be provided in advance. (These will be arranged by the photographer.)

DO YOU ACCEPT PAYMENT PLANS?
Yes! Your Custom Portrait Session or Wedding Photography is definitely worth investing in and often that doesn't mean you will have the money available right away. Your payable invoice will show two payments. The initial payment is a small retainer fee to reserve your date and start the planning process. Your second payment is the final payment where any remaining balance is due. Between that time, you may access your invoice and make payments as they best fit your budget and pay periods at your own convenience!

* Please remember that images and orders will not be edited, view-able, ordered or delivered until your balance due is paid in full.

CAN I SHARE MY PICTURES ON FACEBOOK?
That depends...
If I have posted images from your gallery here on my Blog, Facebook, or Instagram you may share my post to your social media, but please understand that it is illegal to save/download/print those images.

If you have purchased the Digital Download, then yes. Post away! I only ask that you please do not alter the images and please give proper Photo Credit on each image you post to BonellPhotography.com or JuliBonellPhotography.com. I also love to be tagged.
Please note: It is ILLEGAL to alter or screen-cap images from your gallery, blog or anywhere else.

HOW DO I ORDER PRINTS?
Since I put so much work into every image, I want your prints to be their best as well. So I've connected all my client galleries to one of the best professional print labs in the nation. Once your gallery is completed and your private gallery access has been emailed to you, just use the "BUY" button. Be sure to explore the variety of shopping cart options as there are many non-traditional items including product gifts and print packages available to you there!

Additionally, if you are ordering custom items directly through me, I always select among the top professional photographer labs to ensure high quality, durability and competitive prices in my Albums, Canvases, Folios, etc.

You may also be interested in checking out my "Order + Payment FAQs" located on my website.

WHY DON'T YOU OFFER DISCS ANYMORE?

The digital age is traveling fast. So fast, that many newer computers don't even have disc drives anymore! So all those images you have stored away on discs to preserve for your children and grandchildren to have and enjoy? Yeh, those images are being held hostage by the digital age. They are going to need to be digitally transferred to something else someday very soon if you ever want them seen again. Think about it... it was only about 25 years ago that everything was being stored on floppy discs! And not even 15 years ago that movies were still on VHS tapes? So tell me, how is that working out for you now?

So I highly recommend that you not only store your images on your hard drive but also in multiple locations. Hard Drives crash. Cell Phones too. Even Facebook isn't guaranteed to be around forever, right?

Portrait Care Guide... and Printing Advice

Advice on where to print to get the best quality images

Hello my image loving friend!

I've got something special for you that I think you will appreciate.
I know just how important those images are to you. And you're right, those memories SHOULD be displayed throughout your home, work and given to friends and family members. I totally agree. But here's the scary thing. I've ordered prints and photo items of my kids when they were little, that came back with them looking like Oompa Loompas!!!

The quality of your prints and products are dependent on the quality of your lab.

Because your images are so important, I've done extensive research and test prints to find you the best professional print lab. You deserve to have outstanding heirloom prints and products that will last for generations to come. Let's face it, colors should be accurate, inks should not fade over time, and the papers should be archival.
So, I've not only found the absolute best quality professional lab, but I have also connected it directly to your shopping cart within your gallery! So any time you purchase anything through your online gallery, no matter if its a 5x7 or wall art, rest assured, you are getting the best quality available.

However, in this digital age, you may prefer to purchase the digital images and order prints from the lab of your choice.

In those cases, I STILL want you to have great quality at any price-point.

For the highest quality consumer printing results, PLEASE DON'T make your choice based on the cheapest price or most convenient pick-up. Because that is where their focus is, rather than on the quality of their prints. So I strongly discourage using 1-hour photo labs, kiosk marketing printers, big chain everything-in-one-place stores, or in home photo printers. These do not use archival papers and inks and their colors are not professionally calibrated for accuracy.

So, for the best quality images when printing on your own, I recommend having your portraits printed at the following locations, on matte or luster paper.:

*NOTE: DO NOT SELECT AUTO/COLOR CORRECT FROM ANY PRINT LAB. Most labs do not hand touch each and every image to make sure they are at their best. We do that already for you. Just the same, if you are printing one of our B/W images, we recommend you do not choose to “Print B/W” as it may greatly alter the look and feel of your image.
And please remember, I am not responsible for the quality of the prints obtained outside my services of your gallery at www.bonellphotography.com.

MY PRINT LAB RECOMMENDATIONS

TOP CHOICE!! MPIX: www.Mpix.com

How my clients inspire me each day: Western Washington Photographer

You would think that most of my days are basically the same. You spend most of your time either on location, in the studio or at the desk. But in reality, there are so many things that make each day unique.

I absolutely love all the people I have gotten to know in what, next month will mark, 6 years since starting by business. I'd always been an artist in some form, but as a photographer, I get the great opportunity to meet and work with some of the most fun and inspiring people.

I have documented gorgeous weddings that have blossomed into amazing and wonderful families.
I have photographed countless athletes who push themselves to always be better than the day before.
I have had so much fun working with hundreds of High School Seniors as they prepare to embark on their future endeavors and become rather impressive adults.
And I have reintroduced beauty to women who, all-too-often, have lost touch with their confidence and self love.

Each of them inspire me in different ways and they don't even know it; They make me proud, make me laugh, I empathize when they experience great challenges, and they push me to be my best "me" and appreciate the life I live, and people who are in it.

So this morning, I was at my desk editing and playing videos on my split screen when a particular music video made me think of one client in particular...

Meet Cheri...

Cheri graduated from Montesano High School last year and I was honored to take her Senior Photos.
Cheri is also among the toughest and bravest people I know because she also lives with Cystic Fibrosis. She also shares her story & fight on her Facebook page and Instagram. So check her out if you want to cheer her on.

So while I was editing this morning, and a particular video came on, I couldn't help but to freeze. I'd heard the song over a hundred times, but had never really listened to the lyrics... until today.
Watch the video and you will see why it made me think of Cheri and why I am so proud of this strong and beautiful young woman.

Every single person I photograph and work with.... I may occasionally, and casually, refer to you all as my "clients", but you are my friends, my family, my inspiration... EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Thank you all for pushing me to be a better me.

Show appreciation for even the little things... because those matter too.
Live everyday to your fullest.
Love each other AND YOURSELF.

No go out and be a better YOU.
Live.

Private Online Galleries - [Bonell Photography: Grays Harbor]

Your online gallery with Bonell Photography now comes with maximum security.

Your privacy is among my top priorities. So all my client's galleries are password protected... 3X! First, in accessing the entire Client Galleries section, again to enter each individual Gallery. And finally with your own personal account setting! Every access point on the BP side has separate, unique, top security passwords that are highly sensitive. Then, you have the added availability to add your own private password to view your personal galleries with ease!

That being said, it's still easy for you to share your entire online gallery, with those you select, through our PRIVATE GALLERY INVITE. Think of it like a private party with a secret handshake. Simply invite people you would like to have full access to your images
by sending me your exclusive vip guests' email addresses. I'll then enter the addresses you send me, to your gallery's "guest list", and a PRIVATE GALLERY INVITE will be automatically emailed to them. They create their own personal account and BAM!!

Currently, you can invite up to 50 people to privately view your gallery, order prints and download the files, (when your packages includes the Digital Download.) If you don't want them all to have downloadable access, simply request a download code be required.

In addition to the security, the emailed invite only works once and is unique to the receiver. So if the email is forwarded, the invite won't work. Or if North Korea hacks into their email account thinking they are a movie industry, it wont even work for them.

Decide your "Private Party" is getting out of hand? You can simply let me know who the unruly guest is, and I will revoke their access to the gallery. ACCESS DENIED!

So no matter if you are booking a Senior Session, Wedding or even a Belle Boudoir session, rest assured that your images are safe with us.

Why you DON'T want the RAW images...

From time to time, a client asks me for the RAW files from their wedding or session. Many people are familiar with hearing the term "RAW" and are under the impression that RAW files are a good thing to have. They are... to the photographer, but do you even know or understand what they are? Most people will not be able to open the files because they (or you) likely don't have the proper editing programs that Professional Photographers use anyway. No offense, it's just the truth.

"35mm-undevel" by Jay Holben - CC

No, its actually not like having the negatives. And for that matter, pre-digital age professional photographers would never sell you their negatives either, you would receive "proofs" usually 4x6 prints with their watermark or "PROOF" printed across them.

Think of it this way, RAW files are more like undeveloped negatives that have not even been taken into the darkroom yet. Unless you had the chemicals and a darkroom, they are no good to you. RAW files are basically useless to you in its current state. You need a professional to take the RAW files into the now digital darkroom. So if its the feeling of wanting the "negatives" you want, then purchase the jpeg digital files from your photographer with a Print Release.

Paintings and sculptures do not come with the artist’s initial sketches.
In another analogy, when you buy a book or see a movie or play, does the author or director also give you the large stack of all their rough drafts, notes or unedited scripts? Of course not. Why would you want them? And if for some crazy reason you did, it would likely be something from J.K. Rowling, Steven King or maybe Steven Spielberg or George Lucas. And those notes would sell in auction for 6 or 7 figures.

And lastly, hiring me, (or any photographer for that matter) means that you are hiring me to provide a finished product, as well as the process I use to get there. I would hope that before selecting any photographer, you have taken the time to look through some samples of their work, and like the finished product you see. Not simply picked someone by their price-tag, because you really do get what you pay for. So trust your photographer. Have faith that they will provide you with the best images and process them in a way that YOU CHOSE by selecting them and their style, as your photographer. Getting your money's worth has nothing to do with the number of images shot, but everything to do with the quality of the images that are delivered.

So when I am asked for the RAW files from a recent shoot, beware. I might sarcastically say, "Sure! For a price..." and I'm sorry, but I am 99.9% sure that you won't want to pay it since it would likely have 4 or more zeros at the end.

Don't Be A Grinch...

I recently received word that a client of mine posted some of the digital images she purchased from me, to share them on social media with friends and family. This is wonderful! However someone else downloaded one of the images and is now posting it online in a way that upset my client greatly.  I understand that family dynamics can be a precarious thing sometimes, especially around the holidays. I get that. But my work is also my work and I do everything I can on my end to protect it, my clients and their children.

PLEASE DON'T BE A GRINCH...
Okay, first of all... my photography is my artwork. I pour my heart, my soul into my livelihood, and it quite literally pays my bills. So while I would love to work for free, I simply can't without my family sacrificing for it.

I own the full copyright to all of my images, and provide my clients with a Print Release when they purchase the digital images, which gives them written, legal permission to print and share the images with others.  But that's not the end...
Did you know that screen captures, scans and cell phone photos of your images are considered stealing? Yep! It is! And it is punishable by as much as up to $250,000 per image, and 5 years in prison!

PROTECTION...
When I post and share images from my sessions online, I include a WATERMARK on the images to help PROTECT both my client and myself, from people illegally stealing (aka: downloading) and using these images in a wide variety of ways, while also allowing my clients to legally share these images online with their friends and family.

Again, the watermark is not there to take away from your image or to sneak in advertising, it is there to PROTECT US BOTH, by discouraging others from wanting to steal, print or use these photos illegally without consent.
This protection also is automatically applied to your online gallery.

There are many reasons people download and steal images online, some have completely innocent intentions, while some are rather scary. While a watermark is not 100% protection, it will strongly discourage it, or at least give legal photo credit, which allows you to share my images online. So please think about what images you post or download. And if you love my images, please consider placing an order or sharing our protected, watermarked versions rather than being a Grinch.

So clients, friends, family... please think about what you post, download, and what you use online. I love it when my clients are excited to see and use their images, but please remember that if you post your unprotected images on your social media, others may use them in a way you don't like, and there is very little I can do about it to help you.

If you ordered digital images from me, and would like watermarked, re-sized and sharpened versions of the images to share and protect yourself or your family, Simply shoot me an email to request them and I would be happy to send you complimentary watermarked versions quickly and easily..

Thanks everyone!
~ Juli

What is Important... And What is Not, in Choosing Your Wedding Photographer.

A great wedding photographer tells YOUR story through their images. The last thing you want is to look back on boring cookie cutter style wedding photos that were supposed to bring you back to that place, that emotion, that special moment in time. When choosing your wedding photographer, you want someone who can tell that story. So take the time to find the right photographer for you.
We would love to tell your story.

The following is some great advice I wanted to share from a former photographer and contributing writer at MaryThis.com

Important: Style
The style of a photographer affects everything. One photographer may pose you as a couple before taking shots and the other may document you interacting with each other from a distance. There are “traditional” wedding photographers, there are wedding photojournalists, there are those who process their photos in a muted-color, very “Martha Stewart” style and there are some who love the edgier look of a high-contrast photo. These styles and many, many more exist out there. There is no right answer. The right answer for you is the photos you like the most. If you see a photo on a photographer’s web site that you think you’d hang on your wall, that’s a good sign they’re a good fit for you.

Important: Personality
It’s true that on your wedding day, you’ll probably spend more time with the photographer than you will with your new spouse. So it’s pretty darn important that you get along.
Pick someone you’d be friends with otherwise, someone who gets you and who you don’t mind spending lots of time with. If you feel uncomfortable around them, head for the hills. This chemistry between photographer and client really is key – key to great pictures (no one looks beautiful when they’re tense!) and to happy, drama-free memories of your wedding day.

Not-Too-Important: Experience
I am not arguing that experience doesn't matter. It does matter. But sometimes clients put too much emphasis on this when searching for a photographer.
You absolutely need a photographer who knows their equipment inside and out and has photographed weddings before. But they needn't have been shooting weddings for years; in fact, I know some really talented photographers who are in their first or second year in wedding photography. Sometimes they have the freshest ideas, and they haven’t gotten too comfortable in their routine.

Not-Too-Important: Equipment
Sure, you don’t want to pay someone good money, then have them show up with a dinky point-and-shoot camera. But one of the overarching truths of photography is this: a camera does not make a photographer. Many wedding couples think that since their Uncle Bob bought a big honkin’ SLR, that he’d be a good candidate to photograph their wedding. But they’d most often be wrong. A good wedding photographer is someone who can take a stunning picture with a Polaroid camera if they need to. The tools help, but it’s the photographer’s eye you’re paying for.
In the end, it’s going to come down to what’s important to you and what you really want from your wedding photographer. Sit down with your fiance and discuss these factors before you start shopping, and you’ll know what you’re looking for once you get out there. Good luck!

Important: Price vs. Budget
Your budget says a lot about they type of photography you are going to get in return. It also says a lot about how you value the importance of those images after the wedding day is over.

These days, you can randomly check facebook for photographers and find plenty of them offering their full day wedding photography for less than $1,000. However, what it comes down to is quality. If you are not so concerned about the quality and your budget is very small, then great! But if that matters to you, and you want beautiful images to last a lifetime or maybe even to order a large print or canvas to hang on your walls, you will want to be leery of anything under $1500 for full coverage.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Lets face it, weddings are a luxury; the celebration of the marriage itself. As for the photography, next to the actual marriage taking place, the photography is probably the most important part of the wedding because it is what you will keep in the end. Not the flowers, not the cake, not even the dress... the memories, documented for generations.

Why Is Wedding Photography So Expensive?
The reality is that there is a lot that actually goes into making great pictures that you'll cherish forever. It's much more than just showing up to take the pictures and then handing you a CD. There is actually quite a bit that takes place before, during and after your wedding, that contributes to the final result.

Before the Wedding
Professional photography is definitely an acquired skill. Most photographers spend years learning how to master their camera equipment, lighting scenarios, image composition and different posing situations that work and what to avoid.

During the Wedding
During the wedding, your photographer will arrive many hours before the ceremony to capture the details. Often this includes the bridal party getting ready (hair & makeup, putting on the dress, etc) as well as the groomsmen and groom getting ready. Also, as the ceremony and reception areas are set up, the photographer will capture the details of the decorations, table settings, etc. Of course, the photographer will then Take photos of the ceremony and reception, as well as any send-off.

After the Wedding
This is the component of the process that is probably the most misunderstood, as it is the one that the couple has little-to-no exposure to. Your photographer will spend many, many hours selecting, processing, enhancing and tweaking your images after the wedding day. An average 8 hour wedding will require several weeks worth of work on the part of the photographer.

A Photographer's Expenses
An independent photographer is running a business. Businesses have expenses and they take hard work to build and maintain.
* Equipment. High quality camera bodies cost thousands of dollars. Lenses can cost thousands more. And with taking thousands of frames per wedding, even a good camera will need to be replaced every couple of years. Then there are flashes, light meters, tripods, camera bags and other miscellaneous gear.
* Taxes. Your photographer pays taxes on every dollar they make, just like everyone else. So if the fee is $3,000, much of that will go to Uncle Sam.
* Insurance. Many wedding venues require photographers and other vendors to carry liability insurance. Photographers must also insure their own camera equipment. Each of these types of insurance costs several hundred dollars per year.
You should never feel pressured into paying more than you want to pay for wedding pictures, but neither should you assume that higher prices are simply a scam or a ripoff. Once the cake is eaten and the flowers wilted, your photos (and your marriage!) are what you have left. A good photographer will provide you with photos that are worthy of becoming part of your family's history.
